App Description

Duolingo is Apple's iPhone App of the Year! Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn languages with over 170 million users. 23 languages to choose from. Super fun and free — Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Irish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Turkish, Norwegian, Polish, Hebrew, Esperanto, Vietnamese, Ukrainian, Welsh, Greek, Hungarian, Romanian, and Swahili. Oh, and English too. "Far and away the best language-learning app." —The Wall Street Journal "Duolingo may hold the secret to the future of education." —TIME Magazine PC Magazine Editors' Choice for Language Learning: "Among iPhone apps for learning or practicing a language, you can't beat Duolingo." "The most productive means of procrastination I’ve ever discovered. The short lesson blocks are painless and peppy, and reaching the next level (and then the level after that) becomes addictive." —Slate Duolingo is changing the way people learn languages. With Duolingo, you learn a language for free. You have fun while you learn, leveling up and competing with friends. Yeah, it's pretty sweet.

App Reviews

  • Ads even if you paid premium

The app I used to love is now a major pain in the a**. For starters, now there are ads at the end of every exercise along with the phrase "Ads like this keep the software free". Except my app *wasn't* free, I paid for the extended version. The ads are the least of your worries. Now you have a "health bar" that counts down if you make a mistake.. even if the reason you made a mistake is because you were guessing because they throw words at you sometimes without defining them first. Run out of health? You have a few options: complete a review that is tedious and annoying and only gives you one health bar back, wait four hours for one health bar to come back on its own (so a refill takes almost a day.. UGH), or the ever-present money grubbing option, PAY FOR HEALTH BARS. I though Mondo was expensive for $48 for a year.. but Duolingo is now such a monumental pain, $48 is looking better and better. Some of us do this for an hour or two a day, because we like to learn something instead of play Candy Crush. I am practically a pro at using language apps. If this app infuriates me, and I'm exceptionally good at it, I can only imagine how terribly frustrating it must be for people who don't learn languages easily.
  • New Version Greedy Money Scandal

They have made the app unusable unless you want to fork over endless amounts of money. I would rather pay a flat reasonable fee to use it that dump money into an endless pit to learn at my previous rate. Repetition is important and it's important it be done at quick intervals. The new setup prevents this unless you want to dump on money on "gems". Way to turn a wonderful app that helps people into another symbol of modern greed.

It's a fun app although the health bar is a annoying and I feel like once you get into a the 3rd lesson in Spanish it rushes the process and puts like 50 billion words into one lesson with out teaching all of them if they fix those to things I'll change my rating to a 5 star
  • Makes learning fun and addictive!

Lots of great features, fun lessons and categories. The 'Clubs' let you interact and compete with other people learning the same language. On a side note, they removed the 'health bar' system (great call) and I believe greatly improved the app by doing so, keep up the good work!

Every update seems to make this once great app less of a desirable object to have on my phone.

The health thing is so dumb! I got very far in a lesson and had to restart the whole thing because of health! No
  • Offline

Why isn't there an offline feature? Yes ads are a thing. But what about the useless number of gems given to us that we couldn't possibly spend in the pathetic center they call a "shop." Use the gems to allow people to buy offline time. I've used this app for 3 years and the lack of offline performance is literally one of two things I find fault with. Like, internet is good and all, but I wanna be in the wilderness for a bit without losing my streak.
