  • Where do I start? Very confusing interface.

Incredibly confusing interface. The solution is so simple and I think the developers should invest a day in making the app more intuitive. First, why do the icons for desktop and mobile device look so different? I wasn’t sure that they were the same app. One is brown/black and the other is green/white. Why? Please make your branding easily recognizable across devices to lessen confusion. Next, the app has two modes. There is no explanation in the app that tells you what these two modes are. Each mode simply has an icon that you tap and the developers expect you to just know what they do. That’s ridiculous. I had to go to the website and investigate. Why don’t you just put the names of the mode on the screen where you’re activating it? Why should I have to do research to understand what they do? The user experience should be intuitive and seemless. You oversimplified the interface so much you’ve left me bewildered as to what the heck the app is actually doing. Also, why don’t you just have the two modes as two buttons on one page in the app? Why are they on two different pages? In the app, there are two modes. Privacy and Performance and Secure Wi-FI Mode. What do they do? How are they different? There’s just an icon for each of the modes. No title. No explanation. Well you have to go to the website to understand that. The nomenclature is simply not intuitive. One is thought to believe that Privacy and Performance includes VPN but it doesn’t. Isn’t privacy the very reason people use a VPN? Alas, the VPN is activated in Secure Wi-Fi mode. This all needs to be cleaned up to make it easier to know what the app is actually doing. Then, when you get to the desktop version, that nomenclature goes out the window! In the app, the two modes have been renamed to Blocking Mode and Premium Protection, which I believe are the same as Privacy and Performance and Secure Wi-FI Mode in the iOS app. Are you kidding me? Why are the same features called different things on different devices. So confusing! Also, Disconnect has a “Premium” plan and a “Pro” plan. When I saw a “Premium Protection” button on my Mac (aka Privacy and Performance Mode) I thought I was subscribed to the wrong plan. Here’s what I thought using the app on my Mac. I subscribed to “Pro” but I am offered only “Premium” Protection on my desktop. So I had to investigate to make sure I was actually subscribed to the right plan. Overall, the software is good. But the developers need to spend more time cleaning up their branding, plan names, feature names, and improving their utterly confusing interface across devices. This investment will save users a lot of headaches and confusion. I recommend consistent logos, consistent nomenclature for features, and better guidance on what each feature actually does, especially in the iOS app. Pro and Premium are synonyms. Pro denotes premium features and premium denotes pro features. No way to tell which one is which intuitively. Perhaps you can call them Pro and Pro Plus VPN or something like that. Hope you guys can use this info to improve the user experience.
  • Doesn't stay connected

Really liked the idea of this, but the vpn disconnects frequently. Worst fail case for me was that the vpn icon was showing, but vpn dropped without blocking internet access, so I was actually surfing thru the airport wifi unprotected. Choose a different vpn.

This used to be a great service. I have paid the $50-ish/year for the full VPN service for 2 years now, but here’s the problem: for most of the past year, it breaks everything. I flip on the VPN, and poof!—I can’t access the internet at all. Sometimes I can fix this by changing the location—from “Closest” to Germany, for instance—but just as often, it doesn’t do anything and I just have to go back to browsing in the clear. It’s very frustrating, and I have since started relying on other paid VPN services. Between their apparent abandonment of the disconnect.me meta search engine, the rarity of any real fixes and updates to the app as of late, and their consistent failure to provide the most elementary security by providing checksums of their desktop pkg files (it’s a VPN service! Security is supposed to be their thing!) despite my request that they do so ~1 year ago, I can no longer recommend their products. Frankly, it sometimes feels as though the project has been abandoned entirely.

Purchased disconnect premium, app function is less than stellar. VPN drops frequently on any given day and the worst part is you don't know until it's too late. VPN still shows active across the top of my screen, but all of a sudden I'm getting ads and pop ups and who knows what else?! Upset that I paid for something so unreliable, and will not be paying more in future unless these developers (nice though they may be) produce something that's actually safe and reliable.

I purchased a Lifetime Premium License from Mashable for $49.99. When I try to apply the license to the iOS app, it won't take it saying I must purchase a recurring subscription through the iTunes store. There's no where in the app to apply my license purchased outside the app store. And using the activation URL is an invalid URL that no browser will open. (disconnectme://link?code=..... ) I bought the Premium because I could install on my desktop, iPad, and iPhone. However, it appears only the desktop can use the app while they want even more money for the iOS devices. Very unhappy customer.

With mild to moderate surfing the app has blocked 686 tracking attempts on a single iPad.

Been using their extension for years and now finally upgrading to their iOS app for better protection. Had an issue activating the app and emailed support. Received a response within the hour! Was able to quickly resolve it. Very impressed. If you care about your online privacy, do yourself a favor and subscribe to their premium service!
